In this episode of A Journalist’s Guide to AI, I’m joined by Dr. Bahareh Heravi, an associate professor and leading expert in responsible AI use in journalism.

Bahareh shares her journey from a background in computer science to working at the intersection of technology and journalism. A lot of her path was shaped by the challenges of detecting and verifying news during Iran’s Green Revolution, which sparked her interest in how technology can support journalism.

We talk about how AI and computational tools have evolved in newsrooms over time. What started as skepticism is now slowly shifting toward experimentation—especially with the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
