Hi, I’m Yumi Wilson
I’m a journalist, professor, and AI educator who helps communication leaders and organizations understand how artificial intelligence is reshaping what gets seen, trusted, and used and how to respond with clarity.
I was trained as a reporter at the Associated Press and spent years in newsrooms like the San Francisco Chronicle, where accuracy, judgment, and clarity are non-negotiable.
That training shapes everything I do.
Because what’s changing right now isn’t just technology, it’s how information is selected, interpreted, and trusted.
And most professionals were never trained for that shift.
Today, I teach at San Francisco State University, where I help students and professionals think critically about media, technology, and storytelling in an AI-driven environment.
As a U.S. Fulbright Specialist, I designed and led a 10-day AI journalism workshop at the National University of Laos, training faculty and students in AI-assisted reporting, interviewing, and verification.
I also work with global audiences through programs like the PWorld AI in Communications Boot Camp and industry conferences, helping communicators and educators navigate rapid change.
💥 What I Actually Help People Do
I work with communication leaders, educators, and teams who have been asked to “figure out AI”—often without a clear roadmap.
In my sessions, I focus on:
how AI systems surface and prioritize information
how messaging changes when answers replace links
how to maintain credibility in AI-assisted workflows
how to guide others without overpromising or oversimplifying
This is not just about tools.
It’s about understanding how decisions get made and how your work fits into that system.
My approach is grounded in a simple framework I teach across workshops and trainings:
Clarity — making ideas understandable and usable
Context — providing enough signal to be trusted
Role — establishing credibility and authority
Intent — aligning with what people are actually asking
This helps individuals and teams move from experimentation to informed decision-making.
The Thinking Framework I Teach
I’m also the host of A Journalist’s Guide to AI, where I speak with journalists, communicators, and leaders about how AI is reshaping visibility, authorship, and trust.
These conversations dive deep into the practical and ethical shifts currently redefining our industry. We explore what it means to lead and create in an automated age.
Alongside my training and speaking, I work 1:1 with professionals navigating career transitions or major shifts in their work.
These sessions are focused, practical, and grounded in real decisions—whether you’re redefining your role, adapting to industry change, or figuring out what comes next.
