Hi, I’m Yumi Wilson
I’m a journalist, professor, and AI educator helping media professionals understand how artificial intelligence is reshaping the way we work and how to use it responsibly.
I began my career as a reporter with The Associated Press and have spent more than 20 years in journalism and higher education. I currently teach at San Francisco State University, where I help students and professionals think critically about media, technology, and storytelling.
As a U.S. Fulbright Specialist, I designed and led a 10-day AI journalism workshop at the National University of Laos, training students and faculty in AI-assisted reporting, interviewing, and verification.
In my workshops, I focus on practical skills journalists can apply immediately. I teach how to use generative AI for research and drafting, how to verify AI-generated information, how to maintain editorial voice and accuracy, and how to navigate the ethical implications of AI in journalism.
I offer coaching and speaking for professionals navigating reinvention — whether the change is personal, professional, or technological.
Through 1:1 coaching (Yumi Wilson Coaching), I help clients move through transitions with clarity and confidence. Whether you’re pivoting careers, rebuilding after burnout, or seeking deeper purpose, we’ll reframe limiting beliefs, strengthen your voice, and take bold, grounded action toward what’s next.
As a speaker and podcast host (The Journalist’s Guide to AI), I explore how technology, storytelling, and personal growth intersect — helping communicators and creative leaders adapt to change with integrity and heart. (The podcast will soon expand to include stories of reinvention and transformation.)
Each path is unique, but the goal is the same: to help you move forward with clarity, purpose, and a story that feels true to who you are.
Teaching
At San Francisco State University, I help shape the future of journalism education by teaching media writing and broadcast courses and developing new approaches to storytelling in the digital age. I also authored a textbook on news writing in today’s media landscape and have taught reporting to both graduate and undergraduate students at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
