Yumi Wilson is an SF State professor, podcast host, and coach who helps journalists, communicators, and purpose-driven professionals navigate transitions with clarity, strategy, and confidence. Drawing on her deep roots in media, corporate training, and higher ed, she blends real-world experience with a heart-centered coaching approach to support clients as they break through obstacles and reclaim their voice. Through 1:1 coaching, narrative storytelling, breathwork, and ethical AI tools, Yumi guides individuals and teams to move forward with an empowered personal brand. She also hosts The Journalist’s Guide to AI, a podcast exploring how emerging tech reshapes storytelling and how media professionals can lead with innovation and integrity.

I offer coaching, mentorship, and training for professionals navigating reinvention—whether it’s personal, professional, or technological.

Through my 1:1 life coaching (The Reframe Room), I help clients move through transitions with clarity and confidence. Whether you’re pivoting careers, rebuilding after burnout, or seeking more purpose in your day-to-day, I’ll help you reframe limiting beliefs, reconnect with your voice, and take bold, grounded action.

Through mentorship (Byline: You), I support journalists and communicators who are ready to evolve—whether that means leaving the newsroom, reimagining their career, or refining their personal brand.

And through training (A Journalist’s Guide to AI), I teach journalists, PR pros, and creative teams how to integrate AI into their workflows—ethically, efficiently, and without losing their voice or values.

Each path is different. But the goal is the same: helping you move forward with a clear story and a strategy that feels true to who you are.

Teaching

At San Francisco State University, I continue to shape journalism education’s future by teaching media writing and broadcasting courses while spearheading initiatives like the Social Media Journalism course and authoring a textbook on news writing in the digital era. I have also  taught reporting to graduates and undergraduates at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
